Buick continues its tradition of excellence in quality by ranking highly in the J.D. Power and Associates 2005 Initial Quality Study (IQS) and Vehicle Dependability Study (VDS). For the third consecutive year, Buick is among the top five nameplates in initial quality and dependability.
In 2005, Buick earns two segment awards for initial quality; two segment awards for long-term dependability; and GM earns two initial quality awards for plants that produce Buick models. Buick Century and LeSabre rank highest in their respective segments in initial quality and dependability.

Quality Studies

Initial Quality (IQS): Measured after three months of ownership, IQS examines a range of quality issues: defects and malfunctions, quality of workmanship, drivability, ergonomics, and safety-related issues. Problems are measured using a problems-per-100-vehicles (PP100) metric with lower PP100 scores indicating higher levels of initial quality.

Long-Term Dependability (VDS): Measured after three years of ownership, VDS examines many of the same areas as IQS, but adds the durability aspect—how well the product holds up with accumulated mileage. Problems are measured using a problems-per-100-vehicles (PP100) designation, with lower PP100 scores indicating higher levels of dependability.
