Consumers are paying attention to fuel economy, and so is GM, which has taken an industry-leading position on improving fuel economy in today’s high volume vehicles.
GM offers more vehicle models than any other automaker that achieve 30 miles per gallon or better on the highway, based upon EPA estimates. We also offer more car and truck segment-leading vehicles than any other manufacturer, based on EPA estimates and Ward’s Automotive industry segmentation. These facts might surprise some people, but only if they haven’t followed the advancements GM has made in gas and diesel engines and the progress we’ve made on improving fuel economy and efficiency.
Check out our innovative tool to compare the EPA fuel economy of our vehicles with that of our competitors. And we listen to people, too. Many consumers have contacted us with positive feedback on the fuel economy performance of their GM vehicle. That’s great news, and the kind we love to hear from satisfied GM customers!
GM leads the industry in offering the broadest array of cars, trucks, SUVs and vans anywhere. Some of our high-mpg vehicles are subcompacts, like our popular Chevrolet Aveo (EPA estimated 26 mpg city, 35 highway with manual transmission). There also is our midsize 2006 Pontiac G6, which comes standard with a powerful 3.5L V-6 engine and a 4 speed automatic transmission and gets an EPA estimated 32 miles per gallon on the highway. You read that correctly – a V6 automatic sedan, designed to carry five people comfortably, that gets 32 mpg!
In the full-size category, our 2006 Chevrolet Impala equipped with a 3.5L V-6 automatic (EPA estimated 31 mpg highway) beats the Ford Five Hundred sedan with a 3.0L V-6 by four miles per gallon on the highway.
But not everyone’s lifestyle fits into a car, and at GM, we believe you shouldn’t have to sacrifice if you want or need a truck. Two of our most popular full size V8 pickup trucks, the Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra, each with an EPA estimated fuel economy of 16 mpg city and 21mpg highway, offer unsurpassed V8 fuel efficiency in the full size pickup segment. Take a look at how the trucks compare to the Ford F-150 or the Toyota Tundra. And this comparison is made using conventional powertrains.
Also consider that both the Silverado and Sierra also come in hybrid versions, which deliver an EPA estimated 18 mpg city and 21 mpg highway, the best V8 city and highway fuel economy of any full size pickup in the industry. Available in a few states this year, these hybrid pickups – the world’s first full-size hybrid trucks – now have limited availability across the country.
In addition to our popular hybrid pickups, we are rolling out a comprehensive hybrid portfolio, with two more distinct systems on a broad array of vehicles. GM also is the largest producer of E85 flexible-fuel vehicles in the United States, with over 1.5 million vehicles on the road and with vehicles available for sale in all 50 states.
These accomplishments reflect GM’s sincere commitment to producing cars and trucks that sustain our environment as well as our business. Our products feature innovative fuel-saving technologies like Displacement on Demand, fuel-efficient six-speed automatic transmissions, improved aerodynamics and more efficient electrical systems.
No matter what you drive, there are many ways you can save fuel with a few painless behavior changes – some as simple as cutting your highway speed back by five mph. Take a quiz to see how you can improve your fuel economy.
Our vision is that, ultimately, fuel economy discussions will go the way of the horse and buggy. GM believes hydrogen fuel cells provide the most promise for permanently removing cars and trucks from the environmental debate.
Until then, we know fuel economy matters to you from both an environmental and a financial standpoint. We are addressing this crucial issue with the kind of thoughtfully executed global technology, product development and corporate leadership that only GM can provide.
